"When we strive to pass wilderness legislation, what we are really engaged in is democracy at work."

Perspectives on Wilderness : Lukas Stogsdill

I go outside to get away from all the stress brought about by school and other human beings. Out in nature, if I get far enough out there, I truly feel like it all doesn’t matter. Life becomes simple and my focus centers on the moment. From a very young age I have always thought of nature as where you are supposed to go to have fun, and now that I have grown more, the only thing that has changed is my perception of how vast and truly beautiful it can be.

My favorite part about nature is the unique experience an individual can have based purely on chance. Weather it is a gorgeous sunset over a meadow, a majestic mountain view out of their tent, or a stressful encounter with wildlife, it was their own one of a kind experience, never to be shared or seen again.

Wilderness is important to me, and should be to everyone, because of what it encompasses. Starting from the ground up, everything living there has its place. Preserving that serenity is something we may not have a chance to do in the future. If it weren’t for this preservation and the many fond memories I have because of it, my life and perspective could be completely different. I am very thankful for the wilderness around me.

Lukas is a Prescott High School Senior and has been involved with AWC for over 10 years.
