The Sky Island region is Arizona's very own Galápagos - with over half the birds of North America, more than 100 species of mammals, and nearly 4,000 species of plants from tropical and temperate origins - the most biologically diverse region in the United States, and considered one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. Yet many of our Sky Islands continue to be at risk - including Cochise County's Whetstone, Dragoon and northern Chiricahua Sky Island mountains.  

The Whetstone, Dragoon, and northern Chiricahua mountains are part of our scenic natural and cultural heritage - our Land of Legends. These historic treasures provide unparalleled outdoor recreational opportunities, intact habitat for Arizona's endangered wildlife, clean water, cultural and spiritual values and the scenic beauty that make Cochise County a desirable place to live. Wilderness designation is the best solution to permanently protect these publicly owned remnants of wild Arizona, as they are now, and for future generations to enjoy.

Towards that exciting purpose, Sky Island Alliance, Arizona Wilderness Coalition, and our other partners have set a goal to gather 1,500 names in support of Land of Legends Wilderness by the end of October.

Only 6% of our public land in Arizona is protected as wilderness, in its natural, unaltered condition. Without greater protection, our public lands and important Sky Islands like the Whetstones, Dragoons, and Chiricahuas are open to mining, new transmission lines, roads, and irresponsible off-road vehicle use every day, threatening the wealth of wildlife, quiet recreation, and scenic beauty we've come to value.
