TAKE ACTION

You Can Help Us Protect the Tumacacori (TOO-ma-CA-co-ree) Highlands for Future Generations!

Arizona's wilderness areas are a natural treasure, but many of our most magnificent wild places lack the necessary protection from irresponsible development to keep them wild and available for future generations to enjoy.

Southern Arizona's magnificent Tumacacori Highlands is a prime example of a place deserving the highest protection under the Wilderness Act. Representative Raul Grijalva (District 7) has developed a proposal to grant this wild country federal wilderness status; but in order to succeed, his legislation will need the support of the entire Arizona delegation.

You can give future generations the gift of wilderness by emailing, faxing or calling members of the Arizona delegation today!

How To Take Action:

          1. When you make your call, simply leave a message with the person who answers the phone. Let him or her know that you would like the Representative or Senator to support wilderness designation for Arizona's Tumacacori (TOO-mah-ca-core-ee) Highlands. It's that easy!
          2. We also encourage you to let the delegation offices know why protecting Arizona's Tumacacori Highlands is important to you, and why they should support Rep. Grijalva's legislation to designate the Highlands as federal wilderness. Don't forget to leave your name and address so that they know you're a constituent.

BACKGROUND: Situated in the Coronado National Forest, the Tumacacori Highlands comprise the largest unprotected national forest roadless area in Arizona. The Highlands is an open, rugged, beautiful, varied, amazing place in the heart of the Sonoran desert that is home to more than 50 sensitive species including the elusive jaguar. White-tailed deer, javelina, mountain lion, and black bear live in the region, along with hundreds of species of birds.

But the Tumacacori Highlands need your help. This wild sanctuary is threatened by the rapid urbanization of Pima and Santa Cruz counties. While it is primarily roadless today, it is threatened by new illegal roads from irresponsible off-road vehicle use and could become further endangered as new development projects are proposed for the area. We can help maintain the natural character and values of the Tumacacori Highlands by supporting wilderness designation.

REMEMBER! Please email, fax or call your senators and representatives today and urge them to support wilderness designation for the Tumacacori Highlands. Your message does make a difference! Then, help keep the calls coming by forwarding this alert to your friends and family members and asking them to take action as well.
