EVENTSPhotos from our recent Apache Creek Wilderness Trail Building Projectwith the Prescott National ForestJune 12-13, 2010On June 12, AWC's Central Arizona Director Sam Frank led a group of 7 volunteers (and three honorary canine volunteers) into Apache Creek Wilderness, with assistance from Prescott National Forest Wilderness Ranger Tim Craig, to rebuild a trail that provides access to Apache Creek Wilderness. This 2-day project consisted of improving a crossing at Apache Creek to prevent further erosion along the sensitive riparian corridor, as well as lots of cutting back overgrown brush and repairing the trailhead.
The work was arduous and remote, but a significant portion of the trail is now sustainable, well-marked, and ready to offer adventure to the wilderness explorer. "The enthusiasm of the volunteers and Forest Service staff made the physically demanding work fun to be a part of," Sam says. "A beautiful night under a starry sky and beside a warm campfire gave us all the recuperation we needed to head back out and finish the work on Sunday." "I wish I could say it was my gourmet dinner and breakfast that gave everyone the gusto to hike the miles, move the rocks, and cut the brush, but in reality I think it's an inherent quality of the volunteers we get on these trips."
